Unlike other after-school programs, which generally focus on a single aspect of development, Active Children Portland is committed to improving outcomes for kids in our programs in a variety of ways. Because our programming includes sports, creative writing, service learning and nutritional education, we are able to meet kids where they are at and help provide more holistic programming and resources.
Our coach-mentor led programming provides yet another resource for kids both in the classroom and on the field. Our programs are led by coach-mentors from the communities where we operate, ensuring that our programming is both culturally responsive and community based. Services are offered in Fall, Winter, and Spring during the school year for two hours a day on Monday – Thursday. During that time kids play non-competitive soccer, teaching them not only skills while running drills, but about being a good teammate, leadership, respect, and building self confidence. The other half of the session is in the classroom, using creative writing, arts, and fun activities to inspire discovery and engagement during the regular school day.
We work with local non-profit partners like Latino Network, El Programa and Impact Northwest, ensuring that we are providing the communities we work with with the tools they need to ensure positive community engagement. ACP’s after-school programming is grounded in our community-based approach. This means that we get the whole family involved, particularly in our community service and nutrition education projects! Families in our programs may be asked to cook a healthy family meal, help plant a community garden, or share a family recipe with other ACP families. We are committed to providing fun and engaging activities for the whole family!
