10 years of commitment
Active Children Portland is celebrating 10 years of being committed to the community! During that time we’ve worked to reduce barriers to sports, increase health and nutrition opportunities, enrich academic engagement, and provide a safe, mentor-led after-school environment for kids in historically under-served communities.
We started with soccer for 100 kids at six schools. Since then, we’ve expanded to serve over 30 Portland-Metro area schools and sites for over 1,200 kids annually. Not only have the numbers grown, but also the scope of services. We’ve added custom nutrition programming from the OHSU School of Nutrition, creative writing, service learning projects, as well as new theater and improv curriculum. We’ve also expanded our movement programming to include volleyball, Roller Derby in Partnership with Rose City Rollers, and this coming year track and field!
30 Schools
& over 1,200 Kids
Over the next 10 years, our goals are to serve more kids and provide even higher quality academic, health, and movement experiences. We want to support girls and non-binary youth in exploring opportunities in sport and movement. We want to hire more coaches representing the kids in our programs. We want to improve health programs and increase access to healthy foods. And we want to continue to do this with zero cost to our youth and families.
We can’t get there without you, our COMMUNITY!

10 Outcomes in 10 Years
Ten Ways ACP Contributes to Positive Outcomes for the Kids in our Programs:
Prioritizing creativity and discovery in learning to engage kids in the regular school day, increasing attendance, grades, and positive future outlooks.
Reducing inequity in education by providing individual support in homework, creative writing and poetry, critical thinking exercises, and new STEM-compliant service-learning and entrepreneurship.
Promoting improved health outcomes for kids through 60 minutes of activity and sports daily, access to healthy foods, and nutrition education all meant to build healthy minds and bodies.
Contributing to social and emotional development for the kids in our programs by providing a safe space for them to grow and learn.
Providing a safe space for social and emotional development
Creating an outlet for kids to improve their physical fitness for success both on and off the field through non-competitive soccer designed to build teamwork and respect.
Encouraging positive community involvement through annual service projects promoting whole family engagement. such as the building of community gardens or park cleanups.
Promoting volunteerism, both from participants and the community. Kids develop and participate in service projects, while community members and corporations support their efforts or help run programs.
Programming includes multi-level mentoring, providing kids with coach-mentors from their own communities who serve as trusted and vital adult mentors.
Coach-mentor model ensures that not only are the kids in our programming receiving vital training and job skills, but so are our coach-mentors, who learn skills while giving back to their local communities.
