Now more than ever we are seeing the need for programs like Active Children Portland. With schools facing even more significant budget cuts, especially in lower income schools, students are facing larger class sizes and cuts to enrichment programs. We know that communities of color, which often are some of the communities that see the most drastic program cuts, have lower graduation rates, higher percentages of juvenile incarceration, and greater risk of health issues such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity and cardiovascular disease.
We have also seen widening equity gaps between communities in the Portland Metro area, particularly throughout the COVID-19 crisis as youth of color faced increased challenges with remote learning, often a lack of supervision throughout the day as parents returned to their essential jobs, and diminished access to nutritional services.
Studies have shown that programs like ACP, which focus not only on academia or on soccer, but on whole health wellness, can improve school attendance, help keep kids safe and improve their grades, behavior, and social and emotional well-being. By providing a safe space for kids to be themselves and to receive the tools they need to benefit themselves, their families and their communities, they are bridging gaps to improve not only themselves, but also their future and that of their communities.
