Active Children Portland Welcomes New Executive Director

Active Children Portland is pleased to announce Ben Dudley as the organization’s new Executive Director. During our inaugural 2011/2012 season, Ben served as Active Children Portland’s Program Director and we are excited to see him transition into this new role.

“We got off to a great start last year with programming, serving over 400 kids in 7 schools with the US Soccer Foundation’s Soccer for Success program and the America SCORES program. Our after-school programming is something that we, as an organization, excel at and I see it as the most vital part of the work that we do. I am committed to seeing our programming continue to grow as we fight the battle against childhood obesity and work to fill the student achievement gap.” – Ben Dudley

Born and raised in Texas, though he has always felt like he belonged on the West Coast, Ben, his wife Jamie and their son Nolan now reside in Portland, Oregon. Ben joined Active Children Portland in April of 2011 as the Program Director. A graduate of Baylor University in 1999 with a Church Recreation and Leisure Services Degree, Ben is currently three years into a Masters of Arts and Global Leadership Degree from Fuller Theological Seminary. He considers himself a very lucky man to be married to his beautiful wife Jamie, who is his best friend and partner in life’s journey. He also is loving being a father and is proud that his little baby boy already knows how to kick a ball!

James John Summer Camp

The Kids of James John Summer Camp!

The national teams of Camerigia, Timberlesh, and The Party Country participated recently in a four day Active Children Portland camp at James John Elementary School in North Portland. Eighteen 3rd-5th graders came up with creative country names, unique flags, and national anthems as a part of ACP’s emphasis on creative learning in addition to physical activity.

The camp was part of the school’s Schools Uniting Neighborhoods (SUN) summer programming through LifeWorks NW (http://www.lifeworksnw.org/). Youth arrived by 8:45 a.m. for a light breakfast and then spent three hours each morning in the classroom learning about service learning and playing soccer at the nearby St. Johns City Park and on James John’s community-built soccer field (Click here to learn more about the field!) Before leaving for the day, campers enjoyed a healthful lunch.

Making the Active Children Portland video with students from James John Elementary

James John looked more like a movie set than a summer camp one morning, as the youth starred in an informational video about Active Children Portland’s programming. The video will be shown at Jeld-Wen Field during a Portland Timbers match on Aug. 5. Many thanks to Matt Gromley and his team for all of their help with this!!!

ACP also thanks the following volunteer coaches for helping make the camp a success: Cameron Bennett, Eric Berg, Jarred Frazier, Joel Hawk, Josh Hawk and Delaney Miller.

Stay tuned to see the video and to hear about some exciting new changes that will be happening for Active Children Portland!!!!

Coach Training Session

America SCORES and Soccer for Success coaches receive behavior management and program training

Most of the time when you hear the words, ‘Spring Training’ they are reserved for baseball, but not this time! Active Children Portland held its first ever ‘Spring Training’ last Friday at the adidas Village. We trained 25 coaches, helping to prepare them for our spring programming! We will have 400 students at 8 elementary schools participating in America SCORES and US Soccer Foundation’s Soccer for Success Program.

Notes During Coach Training

Coaches take notes during the behavior management and program training sessions.

The training event was a huge success! The morning got off to a great start with Christa Thoeresz, from the Portland Timbers, as our keynote speaker. Christa shared several stories about how sport can make a difference. Maureen Quinn and Stacey Sowders from OSU Extension Services helped lead the morning sessions, which covered mentoring and behavior management. The afternoon session had Zola Short from the US Soccer Foundation work with the Soccer for Success coaches, while Active Children Portland staff went over the America SCORES curriculum and led a soccer workshop on the adidas field!

Groundbreaking Event for James John Field

We finished off the month of November big, with the 1st annual America SCORES Poetry Slam held on November 17th! Program participants spent their fall season learning about and creating their own poetry in addition to their time spent out on the field and this event gave them a chance to show what they’d accomplished! Seven schools showed up at Benson Polytechnic High School to perform and compete in a friendly battle for a variety of different awards. Guest MC Renee Mitchell was joined onstage by several local guest poets including one poet who wrote a special piece about the America SCORES kids as they were performing on stage!
